Medcezir, the project that showed that the Axyz ensemble is alive and kicking, is over. We had a great time with our guest musicians from Turkey at the revealing rehearsals, the 6 inspring concerts, and three rough days in the recording studio, and an awsome performance at the Karnatic Lab (with Oguz Büyükberber, Fahrettin Yarkin, Alper Kekec, Enric Monfort) . The cd will be released at the end of this year, so keep checking our website for news and updates.

Screaming hooligans, evil clowns, bopping curls, wailing ducks, raging mephistopheles’s, oil tanker martinis, four’ed sevens, what was that’s, one note sagas, stuttering idiots, a night in Ethiopia, frothing thrillers, utter chaos’s, retrograded themes, Bulgarian cafes, fragmented fragments, ladles of groove sauce and mouthfuls of Australian grass. Triodia is the unleashing of the Spinifex Orchestra, Karnatic Lab’s wild chamber jazz band. Goes well with brunch.

[...] After intermission came Hexnut, a brash and talented young quintet from Amsterdam, with influences sprouting from Andriessen, Cage, and pop sources (e.g., metal), and these were only the ones I could immediately place. Headed Mr. McGowan, they began with his Tools (from 2003), that combines alarmingly seductive noise with Webern-like succinctness: two adjacent parts titled “Pneumatic Screed Extension Handle” and “Pneumatic Screed Extension Handle Cover” are approximately 3.5 seconds long, each. (And no vocals, aside from a scream at the end of “Dual Track Grinder.”) Gijs Levelt is exuberant as the ensemble’s trumpet voice, and Ere Lievonen is their brave pianist, forging a new sound from disparate components. ...

The Karnatic Lab Festival is a feast of contemporary, jazz and world music. The musicians, invited from all over the world, draw their inspiration from non-western musical traditions. The result is a festival that stands for new sounds: surprising experiments, moving compositions and wild improvisations.
During the 2007 edition of the Festival, Karnatic Lab Records will present new CDs from Hexnut and STriCat and a compilation CD with recordings by the Indian singer Jahnavi Jayaprakash.

A contemporary band of five soloists, Hexnut skirts the boundaries between classical, jazz, metal and improv. Fiery vocals, virtuoso performances and their unique instrumentation are explored with uncanny invention. It’s a new sound world both intricate and powerful. Hexnut can peel you a grape, scare your neighbors, or tell a tall tale of a prickly-tempered princess, all with a dark lively humor. A new vision of chamber music on an inspired debut disc.

Regelmatig verzorgt Karnatic Lab Records een podcast. Iedere episode bestaat uit een nummer van het label, voorzien van tekst en uitleg van onze labassistenten. De episodes zijn altijd en voor iedereen gratis toegankelijk.
Daarnaast is het Karnatic Lab permanent 'on air' op Karnatic Lab Radio. De internet uitzendingen zitten vol met nummers van Karnatic Lab Records. Voorts besteedt Karnatic Lab Radio aandacht aan previews van toekomstige cd's en zeldzame live opnames. Speciale gastprogrammeurs verzorgen bijzondere uitzendingen met uiteenlopende thema's.
